Apologies in advance for seeming like a conceited ass. I just don't really have many other people to take portraits of.

it's a nice composition altogether. good amount of detail in the shot, you really thought it through. only detail i'd like to point out is you cut the window frame at the corner which just gives it a bit of a unfinished look. otherwise it's a nice photo.

lol You're forgiven... of course, you see, this is because my model is a real pain to work with, always complaining, never likes her pictures... Oh yeah, my model would be me as well

As far as the photo goes, I agree with eydryan that the composition is very good. I like how you've set the shot up. However, the window bothers me for a different reason than eydryan. What bothers me about the window is how it is overly bright for an otherwise dark scene. Perhaps if this were done at a different time of day it would work better. It seems like the room is fairly dark and not much sunlight is coming in, so it might work if you take it closer to dusk or when the light isn't coming so directly in. Just a thought.

BTW, welcome to the forums

Had the camera been tilted up enough (a couple degrees) you would have eliminated one complaint. And, yes, the window's brightness compared to the main subject is also something of a distraction. OK, they aren't the end of the world.

I think that what I like most about the shot is the cat. It says you are a cat person and that the cat thinks you are too. That says something about you. The hardest task in any portrait is to a convey a sense of the person in the image.

So, next time fix the niggles and you will have a grade a shot worthy of the galary, portfolio and/or wall.

VernonShaw, Welcome

If ever a photo needed a sunset in a window . . . warmer light, makes the window an asset (without conceit). I'd think about moving camera view over to frame just you and your roommate. Unless bookcase and lamp are important to you. It's a good shot in general.
