I took the original photo and the background was not completely black, I used pse5 to make the background black. Is there a way I can do this without getting the weird outline around the leaves, etc? I am using the magic selection brush, is there a better way?

Once you have your selction go to select -> refine selection i believe it's called and you can mess with the settings to contract the selection so you don't have the outline
