What lovely eyes she has. You did a nice job emphasizing them. I'm not so sure about the crop, though. Straight across her mouth looks a little awkward. Can you lower it or is that where you took the shot? If so, you may need to crop it higher.

Thanks for the advice, it is where I took the picture, and I will try cropping it higher. I am very new at this and appreciate all the advice I can get.

Karol, Welcome

For fun, and to learn some about composition, take a series of photos of parts of a face, then judge for yourself what's the least amount of information a good portrait needs.

A question of proportion is involved with your crop: it may cause parts not balanced by a more complete face to appear larger or smaller than reality.

Hi. Great advice given so far. I usually have trouble convincing students to move in closer as you have already done. Take some time to study the eyes in good portraits. Catchlights give life to the eyes. I see you have done some color manipulation here. What mood or feeling were you trying to portray with the colorization? Sometimes it helps me to know what a photographer had in mind when I first view their work. I look forward to more of your informal portraits. Keep shooting!

Nice shot, but the mouth looks wierd. It would look nicer with the mouth fully in the shot. This would also help to convey more about the subject's emotion.

Thanks so much for your feed back, I was just randomly shooting close-ups, I am actually trying to get shots of eyes, don't know why, I just think they say so much. I am very new at this and any help I can get it great!

Great site, Jiminy. For folks who want to study catchlights, this may help them. Ideally their placement is best understood when both eyes are visible but this is a very interesting site. Thanks for sharing it.

Karol and clockdoc,

A combination of eyes and portraits in a shorter presentation:
