Default Moon Set

Here is one of my attempts at capturing the moon set from my back yard

http://photos.slushpupie.com/v/misc/moon_rise.tiff.html

Information about the shot:
Camera: Olympus E-300
Exposure Time: 10 sec
FNumber: f/5.6
ISO Speed Ratings: 100
Focal Length: 40.0 mm

I took the shot at 21:02 (sunset was at 20:02, moon set was at 23:42 this day). I mistakenly named it "moon rise" since it was a spontaneous shot- oh well.

I shot in RAW, and did some touch up (I forgot to turn on the noise reduction, and had some spots to get rid of) before converting to a TIFF.

Default There is no picture.

I can't see the picture. I think you forgot to paste the link or attach the file.
Hope you can fix it.

Sorry about that- the link was the thumbnail. I put a link below it to make it more obvious.

I think the image is nice. I also think that for it to be great, it needs something. Perhaps more drama in the sky; possibly some foreground interest. Just one person's opinion.

Was there only half a moon visible in the sky? Because in this shot, falf of the moon looks propely exposed, whist the other half is very over exposed. Not sure how you'd fix this though, becasue if you got the over exposed bit right, then the rest of the image (tree, star ect) wouldn't show.

yes, in fact it was just two nights after the new moon, and it was a very clear night so the moon was bright. Also, since I was after sunset (and even a little after dusk) I needed a 10sec exposure to get any color, so the moon moved a little on me. I think the shot might have been a little better a half hour earlier (too bad I wasnt out then)

slushpuppie,

I've been trying to get this kind of shot for awhile now and have not had any luck. There are some good astrophotographers here and I'm sure some will give you more advice than I can. By the way, is that Venus in your shot as well?

I love the tree set against the sky but I have mixed feelings about the moon and star. I find them a distraction since they are so small and without real detail while the tree is so sharp with it's branches reaching out like tentacles.

In my opinion, it would be really hot to use a telephoto to shoot the moon with some detail and composite it witht the tree...or get rid of the moon entirely.

Nice shot, but to me it looks like the tree is the center of focus and not the moon.
