Default Watson lake Prescott, Arizona

ok so my D-80 arrived today with the 18-135 lens. charged both batteries up and stopped by the lake on the way home. I took several photos. but for some reason I like this one. I was shooting in RAW format. and caught a plane flying by its the black dot in the clouds.

now so many features I do not know how to use yet, but one thing im bummed about is the "dead" pixel on the lcd screen. now its only 1 pixel but it shows up red on the screen. I know its not going to affect my photos, but the fact thats its brand new and has that itty bitty tiny tinny defect. I bought the camera from www.BHphotovideo.com if that makes a difference.

any who on with the photo it was taken in "auto" mode for I am not talented enough just yet to venture out into the manual modes.
DSC_0003

I think it would look nice with some of the sky cropped out.

Good picture although you are correct about the suggested crop.

I agree---nice shot , but the clouds just don't create enough interest to justify their large area. Regarding your pixel issue, I am sure you will hear from those much smarter on this issue than I am but I did a little research on the subject. Here is what I learned. 'Dead 'pixels are black, 'Hot' pixels are white and those with a color such as you deacribed are labeled as 'stuck.' Most major camera makers can run a remapping program on the camera that may correct this issue. It depends on what their tolerance policy is for such conditions. Have you tried others tests such as changing ISO's, turning noise reduction on or off, shooting with the lens cap on? These are just some of the coments I read about during my research. I learned photography when everything was done through enlargements of negatives. Back then dust was the enemy and if you didn't clean the negative well, you had to spend lots of time spotting out hairs, fuzz and specks of dust. Many of the comments I read suggested that there is no guarantee you would get a better camera if you returned it and to just correct the problem pixel with Photoshop or similar software. I hope others will have more helpful advice for you. Keep us posted on your situation.

lee,

there is nothing wrong with the image quality. that red pixel does not show up on my photos. it is part of the LCD display on the camera. even when I am in the menu I can see that tiny little red pixel. grrrrr. now that I know its there I can't stop thinking about it. I will call BH today and see about getting a new camera. or what they recomend.

Re: the pixel issue: most mfgs will state that a single pixel problem is within tolerance. Don't know about Nikon.

Re: the image. It's nice enough, but lacking drama. I think I'd use this image as a basis for playing with colors, filters, grains, etc, in PS or whatever. There is enough there that something good could happen.

If you don't mind would it be cool if I took this photo into Lightroom to play with the colors and repost in this thread?

Nikon says 5 or less dead pixels is within tolerance 6 or more its a defect. I have decided I can live with 1 dead pixel. if it were 2 or more I'd send it back. but I must pay shipping both ways. so I'd be out another 20 bucks and 2 weeks with out a camera. boo hoo I can't wait that long now that I have had the taste of the sweet sweet D-80 in my mouth.
