Moonglow coreopsis just coming into bloom, flowers about 2cm across. Shot using a f/1.8 50, wide open.

I would have preferred the flower in the foreground to be larger, but otherwise I was pleased with the blue/green patterns, and the yellow blobs. Tried cropping tighter on the flower, but could only really do so at the expense of the darker areas in the upper corners, which I think add interest and contrast.

I like this shot quite a lot even if the foreground flower isn't as large as you would prefer. It reminded me of a technique I had read about last year and tried to duplicate. The basic technique was to cut some of the flowers and position them between the camera and the subject to add splashes of color and possibly fill some voids (as I tried to do with the yellow in this shot below). This is probably best done with an assistant as it was hard to judge the best positioning of the flowers without looking at the LCD. But I think this will give you the idea.

Lee --

From the description of the technique it sounded like you were talking about interposing the flowers between the camera and an object which would be the subject of the photo.

The example you provided, though, suggests something different. So I am not sure that I got the idea.

You are correct in that I was attempting to place the flowers between the subject (which in this case was the actual grouping of flowers) and the lens to add some color. The large yellow area in the upper left hand corner is one of the out-of-focus yellow flowers I had cut off the plant. I had the flower too close to the lens and got too large an image. That is why I said it would best be done with an assistance holding the flowers so that you could better judge placement. I obviously still have more work to do with this idea. 8-)
