Took a couple of shots of food yesterday. Was not allowed to use extra lights. What do u think? does it work or do all effective food shots have shot from top and straight? is the back ground too distracting?

The background doesn't seem too distracting, but it seems like the white balance might be off a little. Obviously the 50mm was the right choice since you couldn't use the extra lights. It just seems like it might be a touch on the orange side, possibly from a combination of lights and a somewhat longer exposure (I noticed it was 1/30 second from your exif). You know what I especially like about this (aside from the fact that the food looks pretty tasty) is that you've got a bit of the plate reflected on the table. Hope that the rest of the shoot went well

Yeah, I think that helps quite a bit IMHO
It puts more focus on the food because it gives a better contrast between the plate and the noodles.

You've edited out the background, right? I didn't think it was distracting before, but after seeing the edit, I find the edit to look much cleaner and less distracting
