Congrats on the new dslr! I think it's a great action shot! As far as composition, please take this with a grain of salt, as I am no expert...but I think maybe cropping out the cooler on the left and if possible, leaving a bit more breathing room on the right might enhance the photo a bit more.
All in all, a really nice shot taken with a fairly new camera and action shots take a lot skill to get, IMHO! You did very well!

I agree with YoAshnish about cropping it in a little it will not only cut out the cooler and other distracting objects it will bring the viewer closer to the subject. I like the shot and I think that it would be a cool idea to experiment with a slightly slower shutter speed allower for a bit of blur to show off action. It would be something to experiment with. Also maybe using a smaller aperture might blur the background a little and make it easier to focus on the subject. Overall an awesome moment for a shot! I don't know if you like poeple to edit and repost photos but if you do I would like to show you what I mean about the background and the crop

Great shot and nice camera. Seeing as you shot that at 150mm, I'm assuming you got yourself something other then the kit lens on :x

The only thing that bothers me about the shot is the fact that the background is too much in focus and takes away from where the eyes should be going. It took me a while to notice the ball in the air.

I would suggest maybe trying to blur out the bg with photoshop or something.

I've never shot anything greater then 55mm, so I'm not sure what kind aperture you would need for high dof, or i don't even know if your lens opens up any wider, but if it does and it can, then shooting at a lower aperture will help next time.

Just my two cents

DPS

Here is some of the ideas mentioned. I cloned out the cooler...because of the perspective it made the picture too narrow to crop. I added a blur which is something you might get with a lower aperture and slower speed. I also made a slight crop from the top and bottom to make the photo less narrow and bring the people closer just a tiny bit. I hope this helps. Also if you do not with this photo be edited please let me know and I will delete it immediately.

Nice photo... I think your Sony A100 is capable of shooting 3fps and you may wish to consider using that (if not already) for shooting sports.
