Default Baby Dragon

Fuji FP S3100 ISO 64 f/8 1/1500sec -0.9 comp 6mm

After two hours of no adult dragonfly activity, the little ones started to land on a small sapling near the water. I got within 3 inches for a Macro. Silly kids.

I love this. The shape of the dragonfly is so pronounced. Look at the size of his head!

Fureddo,

Babies do have big ones.. I noticed how much it made them look like the branches. Protective adaptation?

YoAshnish,

"You" are the best critiquer ever! At least when I hope things look OK. Imagine my surprise when these guys let me get in their face. I was about to give up, then poof! Thank you for being candid . . . especially when you like a look.

Beautiful picture.

From an entomological taxonomy perspective, I think what you have photographed is a damselfly. Apart from the size difference, dragon flies hold their double or triple sets of wings perpendicular to their bodies; damselflies fold their more elliptical wings back over their bodies sort of in the same plane.

Both do their growing in a nymph stage, and emerge as basically full-grown adults of their respective species.

This pedantic aside of course in no way detracts from the photo -- I wish I had the patience and skill to capture something like this.

ELAY,

Thanks. That probably explains even smaller versions of these guys I saw just for a second here and there, very fast and almost too small to see. I was disappointed to not get the classic four-wing spread, maybe next time. I'm happy with this for now. Pedants are welcome, too, by the way (although "Baby Damsel" is not as zippy).

Saralonde,

Thank you many times. Looks like Mom was telling it straight: most good stuff is worth the wait.

Well, it's not like I am a Full-Time Pedant or anything...it sort of comes and goes in flashes.

I went through a brief stage where I thought I was a fly-fisherman, which requires a certain amount of streamside entomology..
