Default Black and White Shot

I've recently purchased a Canon 400D camera and am just getting myself started with photography. This shot was taken in a local park using a Tamron 200mm zoom lens. I decided to try out a black and white shot along with a narrow depth of field. I was pleased with my results. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and congratulations on your new Canon 400D and Tamron 200mm zoom lens. It would help me greatly to have a few more technical details such as focal length, f/stop, shutter speed, ISO, hand-held, post processing---etc. My feeling is that it is cropped a bit tight for the mass of the bird. Sharpness is OK and almost there but not quite-did you use autofocus? As a minor point, try flipping the image from left to right. With the bird facing to the right, My eye enters from the left and because the birds gaze is to the right, my eye follows it right out of the frame. As I said, it is a minor point but one worth experimenting with when you have time. I look forward to seeing more of your work and will help where I can. Keep shooting!

Thanks very much for the comments. I'll try to note a few more technical details on future shots. I'm begining to understand the technical terms a little more each day.

The camera was hand held, auto focused and there has been no post processing except for an image re-size so that I could upload it to this website.

Thanks again for your comments

It might be interesting to have a bit more space to the right of the image, giving the bird more room to "look into". On the other hand, I do also like the view of the bird's body, illustrating the narrow depth of field - if this shot was straight out of the camera and not cropped down from an original with more to the right, perhaps it would be best left as it is.
