My favorite is the first one for several reasons. The color of the tail keeps it from blending into the background, the branch is smaller then in the second image making it less distracting, the background is smoother (no lines). On the second shot, I wonder if cropping out some of the empty space on the left side would improve it.

Thanks guys, with the first one, I took a bunch, it came down to two that I liked, I chose this one over the other because of the background, the other had a little better wing span though. It's hard to see in the smaller version, but in the full size, it is actually eating a moth. Everytime I tried to move closer or to a different side, he would fly away... so I had to take what he'd give me...

For the second one, I only took a couple pictures of that one, this one was the best, and although I don't care much for the two distracting branches in the background, I like the dragonfly a lot in this one...

Gorgeous creatures! Well captured. I prefer the 2nd shot for purely aestetic reasons, but agree that a litlle bit of cropping won't hurt. Well done

Both very nice shots. But I also would go with the second one. Also the colors of the background fit with it. Very nice! I like the angle of the shot. You often see dragonflies shot in the way of the first picture. This is something different! Must have taken you some pictures I guess
