Default My First Sunrise

This is the first long*ish exposure I have done. I was lagging behind my SCUBA buddies and propped the D40 on a rock ledge in a hurry. I am pretty happy with it, but what sort of things would make it better? Thanks.

Hi,
Nice work on your first sunrise. I see that you shot this for 30 seconds at f/22. The small f/stop was more than enough to carry the depth of field you needed. Did you do any post-processing? Perhaps your camera provided some noise reduction help as there doesn'r appear to be any noise in the image. My only observation would be to experiment with a little cropping starting with the bottom of the photo. Since there are no dramatic clouds in the sky you could also crop much of the sky away leaving you with a more panoramic composition. Also crop off the partial sign on the right as it adds no value to the image. Thanks for sharing your work with us.
Sincerely,
Lee -clockdoc-

Clockdoc-
Thanks for the reply, I didn't do any post processing, I'm not very knowledgable in PS....yet. I will try the crops you suggested, that sign drives me nuts every time I look at it. It is very distracting. Thank you again.

I think a little cropping will make this shot really nice.

nice effort - for a first one especially.

I agree with the cropping call - perhaps some of the foreground as well as on both sides could do with a little cropping (for example the sign on the right is slightly distracting) but I really like the colors and tones as well as some of the spooky movement of boats.

Keep experimenting - you're definiately on the right track here!

I would not reco cropping of blue sky. It is adding mood to the whole pictures. I would say a little cropping down below would make better sense. Why not post the cropped version mentioned in above posts and other with cropp from just below.

btw .. its nice I like it.

Thank you all for the comments, they are appreciated. I cropped the picture per the reccomendations, the first crop was the quasi panoramic with the foreground, some sky, and a little from both sides (and of course the sign) cropped off.

Monterey Crop Wide

The second crop left the sky, but I took some foreground out to get it closer to conforming with the rule of thirds.

Monterey Crop 2

Did I come close to what you were suggesting? Thanks,
e

the first crop looks better to me than the second crop with more sky
