Default Birthday Portrait

We had a birthday party for my friend Brett here. We were taking portraits of people as they came in. Here's the birthday boy himself.

Hi,
You have captured an interesting informal portrait of your friend. The lighting effect is similar to "butterfly" lighting used in portraiture and in the movies. The name comes from the image of a butterfly created by the shadow of the nose. Unfortunately this type of lighting also needs some "fill" light from the camera position which you did not have in this case. The resulting harsh shadows in the eye would probably make this unflattering for a woman but tends to be OK for a male subject. I like the way you have angled the subject and aggressively cropped the image. Thanks for sharing your work with us.
Sincerely,
Lee
