I think there are three things you don't gain from much here:

1. The subjects are so far over to the right. I guess you could draw a "rule of thirds" grid to cover it but it all feels very unbalanced.

2. The sea and sky looks like it could be a flat painted backdrop. It doesn't have enough context to look "real".

3. The horizon is not level.

Is all lost? Not necessarily - as long as the original is at a reasonable resolution, you could crop off the left hand side, straighten the original, perhaps do a little work on the remaining picture and end up with a nice little portrait.

I you could crop this shot down a little. It would get rid of the excess space on the left and much of the flat background. You would still see they were by the ocean. Leveling the horizon is also a simple fix. Perhaps even a little bit of highlight to brighten their faces. Did you use flash for this?

Personally, I would loosen the tie. Seriously though, I agree with the others on this one.

Different strokes...

Personally I don't think that cropping helps this picture. I like the composition the way it is. Though I have no "technical" basis for this opinion, I like it the way it is. I gave it the old quick crop, finger test (placing one finger over the image then two to "preview" the cropped image) and I don't see a positive change in the cropped version. I think that the image colors could be bumped up a bit. Perhaps even the clothing colors changed to something brighter, would make this image much more appealing. Even if you just changed his tie and the little bit of her dress that shows, I think the image would be more interesting.
