Default Horse Guard

April 20th

Hi Everyone, I took this in Whitehall, I managed to get this shot whilst he was on his own. I'm still trying to get to grips with my 400D but I am having fun with it that's the main thing, any advice would be appreciated.

You've captured a unique moment here, nice job! I like the background's curves and framing.

To make this shot even better, here are some suggestions:
-Next time try to get the guard exactly inside the black doorway...although I'm sure that is hard to consider when you have so little time without the tourists! In any case, this would create some even better framing.
-Open up the left side some more to balance the lovely framing of the arches (you've got a closer arch on the right, but it's missing on the left). It would give the photo some great symmetry. Another option of course would be to crop out the right side's arch and then you'd have balance that way too.
-Some of the white on the guard seems a little harsh to me...perhaps somewhat washed out...did you use a flash? Maybe you could tone down the flash intensity a little or something. Of course I may not be seeing the light correctly because the image is small, so see what you think.

Thanks for sharing and welcome to DPS!

Teewinot,

Thanks for your comments, I know exactly what you mean about the framing and like you said, with extra time, I probably could have got it. I'll Probably go back, as I am not far away and try again!

The Flash didn't fire, so I'm not sure what I did wrong, EXIF Data below:

I would almost give you the exact opposite advice of Teewinot: I think you should get closer to the subject.

From the looks of it, the subject has a lot detail on him. I think if you did a tight crop, it'd make an interesting shot.

Not to say that centering your current shot is a bad idea, just throwing out an alternative

That's one of the great things about photography, there is rarely a right or wrong answer . He might even be interesting from the side instead of straight on.
