I read the following tutorial a couple of weeks ago, knowing that I had a shoot coming up to photograph a theatre production by the bellydance school I attend: Dance Photography - Capturing Movement by Bryant Gover:
http://digital-photography-school.co...ring-movement/ . I then used some of the settings he recommended and these are some of the results. I couldn't use flash and the lighting was rather low. I also didn't have any options as to where I was shooting from - I was on the balcony to the left of the stage using a 70 - 200mm lens mainly. No tripod. I'm only posting two images where the dancer's face is fairly hidden, because I would also like to ask some advise on posting images of a public nature - can anyone help me with the moral or legal implications? Tx Bryant: I'm sure my attemp would have been dismal without your tutorial. Canon 350D, 1/125, f/5, M, 1600 ISO, 76mm (no.1) and 92mm (no.2), no flash, WB Auto These images are copyrighted - please do not download or use without permission. I removed the images.

purplepixie,
At first I thought these were the professional examples; you have stepped into the limelight here, these are -lyrical- wonderfully warm (1) and cool (2). So well done. More, more! For a start on the legalities: List of Photographers rights... (Is the class exercise for you, or are you going for career change?)

purplepixie,
So you are a professional! ("At first I thought these were the professional examples" was a reference to Bryant Gover) And one of my favorite people (graphic designers who bellydance). From a real old dog: learning new tricks is not impossible, it just takes a little longer. I've been completely blown away by all the photos I've seen on DPS since January, and generally since Life, Look and National Geographic magazines have been around, and yet I think photography as a career would be a challenge with great rewards. Change is a little scary, but you've done it all your life. Just not always intentionally. I'll wish you good fortune whatever you do.

(Let me first apologise for not responding - the IT department have somehow blocked my alerts to thread replies, so I only read this now.)
Tx for the encouraging words Jiminy, much appreciated
