Default Orchid

Hello,

I was playing with my camera during lunch and took a picture of my wife's orchid. Please let me know what you think and how can I improve it. I increased the contrast by about 10% in photoshop. I was using Nikon D200 with 18-200mm lens. It was shot at 105mm, f5.3, iso 100, matrix metering

Not sure how to attach picture on here, so here's a link to it.

Thanks!

RL,

I'm still trying to get the hang of this critiquing stuff. Practice makes us better huh?

I really like the shot. The only thing I found myself desiring was better focus on the front leaves of the lower two flowers. It's a little soft for me and the details of the leaves are lost.

Was that shot in front of a mirror or water, or is that another branch in the background? Either way, I like it as it adds depth to the shot.

I also like the mix of colors, white, purple/lavender and black. Very well composed too. Very good job!!

rl168, welcome to dps. It's easy to post a picture from Photobucket. Click on FAQ at the top of this page, then click on "Posting Images", then "To Post a Picture from Photobucket". Basically, you copy the HTML tag and then paste it here.

PnwGuy,

Thanks for the feedback. I used single-area AF to take that picture and was focusing in the middle of the picture. Any suggestions on how I can keep all petals in sharp focus?

And the branch actually has more flowers on the other side.

Saralonde,

Thanks for the tip, I'll try that next time.

I'm not sure on this as this is an area I'm still a little light in but what I would do is change the autofocus to use multiple focus points and see if you can't get it to grab that part of the shot as well. Or you might try opening your aperture up a tad to increase depth of field. Anybody else have any suggestions?
