Neil, I like these -- the overcast, gray days are some of my favorites to go out and take pictures and you've got a good sense of mood going here, with the bleak colors and flat lighting of the overcast sky. The image on the right is more appealing to me, I think because it looks like there is more room for the tracks to go on. (Not sure why more sky helps with this.) Other than that, the two shots look pretty similar.
I like the straight tracks disappearing into the mist. That works for me. I also like the telephone line on the right side of the track -- the poles getting smaller and stuff helps with the perspective of depth. In this composition, I don't care for how the sides are uneven with the tree lines. On the right, you have a nice, imminent tree line that parallels the tracks. On the left side of the shot, you have an open field with some trees in the distance. It makes things lopsided and kind of distracts from the nifty converging-lines-in-the-distance thing you have going on with the rails and the telephone line. If you could get it so that the tree lines sort of matched on both sides, that would reinforce the converging better, I think. The way it is now, it feels kind of unbalanced. |

i like the first of the two, but not the composition. the track is dead center in the frame and even disappears too close to the center of the entire picture. if you stood a few feet on your left and had the tracks going out into one of the corners of the frame, it'd be a lot more interesting.
it's a nice shot, just doesn't do anything for me.

I love the composition of both of these shots. Have you thought about maybe going B/W with these shots. I think it will really deepen the mood of the shots. I played around a little with the second and will be happy to post with your permission.
