Default Seward Small Boat Harbor

Flickr/Larger Sizes

Taken in the Seward Small Boat harbor in Seward, Alaska. The camera that I used to take the shot, isn't that great, hopefully I'll be getting a new one soon. A lens hood would reduce the lens flare, right? Because I've been noticing that in a lot of shots that I have been taking.

Yes, a lens hood would help to reduce the flare in many situations.

One thing I might like to see with this shot is starting the boats in the bottom right hand corner and get rid of some of the excess water in the shot. So maybe angle them from the bottom right towards the bottom left? Just a possibility

I think this shot would've probably benefitted from a UV filter to cut the blue haze on the mountains.

see that pink dot in the top left of the shot? that's lens flare
if you are still confused, take a look at the Google Image Search
if you want a technical explanation Wikipedia has the answer

In cases where you're shooting nearly into the sun and you don't have a lens hood, you've got one built in. It's attached to your wrist.

maybe not the best solution, but using your hand to shade the lens works in a snap. Or if you're using a point and shoot.

Great shot, though. I like the colors and the fact that the boats are between the mountains and the water. It is a little too blue (look at the boat hulls that would be white), so tweaking the color balance might be in order.

Alaska's one of those places I've always wanted to go.

Lens flare is what happens when the sun reflects into your glass and creates spots, lines, colours, things like that. In this picture, there is a red-ish circle in the bottom right region of the picture that was caused by lens flare, here it is kind of distracting. Usually you don't want this, but like anything in photography, sometimes breaking the rules create great shots as well

Wow, everyone is faster than me today, guess I need to grab a coffee before I try to type out any more replies this morning
