JaxSnaps,
Even in Auto, where you point the camera during the half-depress will determine the qualities of your photo. In other words, you tell the camera what settings to automatically set itself at. by what area you give it to work on. Yes, playing will give most of this to you. No hard-and-fast rule about cropping, but generally thin bits of anything are less effective. Like barely cropping the top of someone's head in a portrait is not as effective as just above the hairline, and maybe down to the chin, a real closeup. Most of the rules are based on intention: a 5-degree tilt of horizon is irritating, crooked; 45-degrees shows the tilt is meant to indicate upset, excitement, or just grab your attention. Subjective, sure.
