sdjl,
Odd goings-on at Flickr; these took 5 minutes to show. You had no photostream or slideshow, either. May be a fluke. Second subject is better composed, although small, even if illustrating a point about buds, new growth, etc. Less distracting than first, with its nearly-twin plants competing for attention. Muted colors are pleasant, sets off tiny bits of brighter blue.

In my feeling the 1st pic I feel the blurred flower in background competes with the 1 in the foreground so either needs 2 be cropped or further blurred maybe??
In the 2nd pic I feel flower is lost in the blur. Totally new 2 this but aiming 2 learn.

Personally, I like the first shot over the second. The out of focus areas distract you from the second shot.
As for the first shot, it's good, but the fact that the background is the same as the subject, I can see how it can be distracting. Maybe you can stand back a bit further, close up your apeture, keep the same composition, and thus follow the rule of odd numbers |

I like the shots, but when I look at them my first thought is the lighting. I might be the only one that finds them a little too dark. Perhaps if the subject flower was a little lighter then the background it would stand out more correcting the feeling people have that the background is distracting.
