Default Aperture experiment

Ok cos I am learning about all the buttons I decided *cringe* to try and make heads and tales of the manual for my canon lol

So with a little explanation from Nicole's blog "what is aperture" and a little encouragement from Jiminy I think I might have worked it out.

IMG_3757

Low aperture? high iso fast shutter, ummm its meant to be blue, my living room is blue and my blue curtains are shut.

IMG_3758

High aperture?

Not sure if I got that the right way round, but i think the higher the number the lower the Aperture and the lower the number the higher? I think i understand it. Excuse the subject matter it was the only thing I had at hand lol If I understand it right let me know, plus it means I know what one of my buttons do lol

knickers71uk,

It is one of those things that seems turned around, like wire gauge numbers. If you think bigger and smaller openings, smaller and bigger numbers, you will be describing what the camera is doing.

Did you also notice the change in focus of the background?

yes jiminy I did, i kinda got my head (my head feels so full of stuff lol) round the low number means higher and high number means lower bit, plus the two photos show the difference and gives me something to show me the differences between the two, so a good reference for me.

Also interestingly i downloaded the manual, its the american version and seems a lot less 'wordy' and easier to follow so thats helped.

I keep hearing the phase "lense wide open" what does that mean?

knickers71uk,

Like in the "cram it" method? Wide open, biggest opening, smallest number, most light coming in.
Glad to hear the manual is now a help. Individual cameras have peculiarities all their own.

If your head is full, find a friend there, and explain what you just learned, see if they understand you. Surefire way to test it and to learn it from inside out. Little steps.

If it helps, you can think of aperture as a fraction. F/4 is larger (larger opening) then f/16 (smaller opening) in the same way 1/4 is larger then 1/16.

It is a hard thing to wrap your head around sometimes!

I've only been here for a short time and have found this site and its members to be tremendous resources. When I purchased my camera I hadn't yet found this site. I found the tutorials on the Canon website to be very helpful. They give great examples and have specifics for your camera. Here is the link, check it out if you haven't already.
