My son was at the far end of a gutter pipe that ran under a path at the park.

Interesting subject and choice of frame. You should also try framing him a bit far away from entrance to the pipe rather than close to the entrance..that will give some depth i guess

Where as I understand these shots are usually spontaneous, having more of the face within the arc could make it more of a portrait (a good one!)

Thank you all for the comments. This was a spontaneous shot,. I actually got two shots off, I'll post the other one later, but it is zoomed out further and shows more of the gutter I was shooting through.

diyosa, I don't mind the edit at all. I'm always interested to see different ways of improving a picture. I tend to be lazy on the post processing end of things.
