First portrait attempt! How to improve?

I commented on this in your photostream, but I'll say it here as well. I think that the lighting is great, I just wish that her features were in a bit sharper of focus (mostly the eyes). Otherwise, I really like this shot. I say well done

Good composition, especially having her lean to side. Assuming you have much affection for the subject (Me Lady), you already know her beauty. There is a reason few flattering photos are taken lit from below: it's an unflattering creator of shadow. If raised even a foot more, the light may have brought her nose into equal tone with face, catchlight would look more natural, hair would likely stand out a little from background.

She deserves your best effort. Try to see this from a stranger's perspective. Squint at it from a distance. It is unusual, but something to save for a little brother at Halloween. Using the same method but better lighting, this would be very very good.

Jiminy make a good point I never really thought and I'm sure he is right. That said, however, I really like how this picture turned out. Maybe it's just the model here but the lighting from beneeth seems to add much more emotional depth to this picture. Something about the reflection in the bottom of here eye's draws me to the picture. I am by no means and expert on the subject. I'm mearly just stating my thoughts on this picture. I think I'll try to light from below soon just for experimentation's sake. BTW Jiminy, I'm new here so I want to be clear that I'm just stating my take not discrediting yours. Thanks.

Born in Illinois, raised in Indiana, I learned to have an opinion without getting attached to it. Here, I completely accept the individually-tuned eyesight, preferences, and/or lessons learned of more than 2000 photographers.

Sometimes I state one to see where it will lead. If a photo can be taken 100 ways, how can one of them be "right?"

What is Beauty? What is Truth? Someone asks that every few years and the answers seem to change often. So I just go with a view that I like. This year.

Thanks for the feedback. Will try with different light angles, or maybe same lighting using reflectors to get rid of the shadow from the nose. But thanks for the feedback
