Default Elefunk

First time posting and looking for some decent CC/help. I took this at the local Zoo and was trying to make the Elephant "Pop" a little more, not sure the best way to go, burn backgound, burn elephant (in an entirely PETA friendly way of course).
The only thing I don't like about zoos are the constant refusal of all the animals to stand next to a nice backdrop.
Any and all comments are welcome.

Jeerkahn, Welcome

Are you in the Ele-funk? I've been in a blue funk before, where the choices aren't easy. But could you just go back and wait for the beast to move around for a better shot? Post-processing would certainly lift this, but you'd still have half a pachyderm. It's an OK photo, from what I can see. You may do much better with patience, and a more complete inclusive angle. And color? And an object to show size next to Jumbo? Sometimes all you need is another take.

I've got some other full body shots, but they're all against the same mid tone background, I was starting with this one to figure out the desaturation and PS stuff. Pretty much all I shot in film was B&W and getting that same "feel" from a color is killing me

thanks for the reply, I'll try another shot tonight and see, if not looks like I'm using the color :P

Jeerkahn,

I may not be fully understanding what you've done, but if you want to get decent b/w from a color shot, it can be done. If you mean b/w gives a better look to this kind of shot, it can with a dynamic b/w which may still call for a different backdrop for animal.

Or are you saying before switching to Digital (I assume) mostly you shot b/w film and things look very different to you in color (first)? Either way there are solutions here once the question is clear. And if you describe camera, settings used, edit program, etc. the solutions will be forthcoming.
