Default Gone to the dogs?

Ok, its with some apprehension that I post this thread so early in my photographic education and experience ... but here goes ...

http://picasaweb.google.com/morningt...90754149029570

I was trying to frame Molly (the dog) well, and also capture a little of her personality at the same time, which is tough given her energetic nature - this shot was taken with my 75-300 lens in order for her not to realise I was taking it!

There are also a few others from the same moment that i tried alternative shots/options. I am new to my Rebel XTi having enjoyed a few years of point and shoot with my SD300

Thanks

Jon

jonnyboy,

Even dogs stop and sniff the wind sometimes. The eyes help bring this out of the ordinary. Unfortunate position of that tree causes some distraction, still an enjoyable moment to see. Stay, Molly.

What is Molly's personality? From the picture, I get a sense of a strong, silent type of dog. If that's what you were trying to convey, then I read it loud and clear!

The composition seems a bit plain for me, perhaps next time you should play with different angles. Try going horizontal while still framing all of Molly.

Overall though, it's a cute lookin dog :P

I agree with the comment yurik made about the strong, silent dog. I definitely get that impression. I like the narrow dof, but there might be a little too much of it. It makes me want to crop a little off the top. That might help a little with the distacting tree. She's a beautiful animal and a great subject, even if she rarely sits still. You might be able to use her to practice action shots.

All

Thanks for the feedback. When i took the photo I was actually trying to get her slightly human personality through, I don't know that it worked though - I know her well enough so maybe the photo doesn't quite tell the story.

I took a few more shots, but was limited on angles due to my positioning (I was a good few metres away). Here are some snaps I took at the same time:

I will try and play with the framing by adjusting the crop, and next time I'm home (Live in Chicago, Molly lives in Derbyshire (UK)) I'm going to try and get more creative with angles etc.

I am also learning more and more about the XTi each time I take it out; I have taken about 1500 shots since getting it mid Feb.

Thanks again,

Jon

Looks good Jon. You may want to go for a tighter crop on this shot to eliminate all the extra stuff that's kind of distracting. One of the biggest problems (I know that I have) is making sure you fill the frame with the subject. There are times when "white" space is good, I don't get that feeling here. I think a tighter crop will make this image more powerful. My $0.02.
