I always struggle to take good photos of the moon. These were an attempt. I like the mood of the images, but the technical quality leaves a lot to improvement. Please comment.

I like the second one best. Sometimes the technical "quality" of an image is nowhere near as important as the feelings that an image provokes. Yes, we should all strive to produce the highest quality images that we can, but it is the mistakes that will usually push the art.

i like the second one as well mainly because the moon isn't blown out. shooting the moon is hard with one exposure because you general expose the foreground, or expose the moon. these types of photos are great for HDR images or layering a seperate picture onto the scene.

An attempt to overlay - bit of a rush job - look a somewhat alien?

The overlay version looks great - straight out of a fantasy / sci-fi art book.

I like the second shot but because of the cool way the shadows cover the moon, they seem to take on a shape.

Your overlay looks a little fake but I agree that it does have that science fiction feel, sorta like the moon you would see if your were on another planet.

purplepixie,

Took this tonight and remembered you had asked about ways and means: main difference was holding a strip of polarizing film (from visit to Optometrist) in front of lens as timer counted down and tripped shutter. Without it, best was a big white glob surrounded by a light orange ring.

Looks really good - polarising filter sounds like a good idea - will keep it in mind next time :-)
