Default My first time...

Ok this is my first time shooting a scene with my DSLR. I am new to the photography thing. Is there anything I could have done better to get a better picture? Just FYI this is a house that exploded due to a natural gas leak. This is the resulting smoke from the house fire after.

This is a resized version of the original. Nothing else done to this pic. Taken with an Olympus E-500.

Thanks for your time.

It is a fascinating picture. I think what could improve it is thinking more about where the two officials in the front are positioned.

At the moment they are fairly central and it almost looks like the smoke is coming out of one of their ears! Taking a couple of steps to either side, you could have framed them against the background differently (think "rule of thirds", etc... ask if you haven't come across that term before).

I think the picture is more interesting for having them there but they could be placed better.

moab_b2,

As wulf says; also great color in flame-lit smoke area. If men in front were bigger, cutting them off would be OK. This way is not as good as full figures may have been, off to one side as per wulf.

I would also absolutely submit this to Yahoo's YouWitness News as a photo, if you feel comfortable doing so!
