Ok, hit me. I realize the sky is blown out in the upper right corner. Sometimes when I look at it, it bothers me, and other times I think it adds to the drama.

oo, wonderful shot

my two cents on the blown out sky is that it's okay. It does add drama and to me it shows where the silouetting is coming from.

I'm not sure if it's the computer that I'm using, but I see a small hint of a rainbow around the edge of the blown out sky. Is it just me?

And one more thing I would add is cloning out the cars and road, making it seem like a field. But that could be too post-process-y, ethically questiony.

Overall though, beautiful!

erf, I typed "silouetting" as a placeholder before I looked up how to actually spell the word. But after I finished typing, I forgot to change it :x I meant, "silhouetting"

I did consider cloning out the cars and pavement, but 1) I'm not that great at photoshop--I don't think it'd look so good, and 2) It's a local landmark, in the middle of the parking lot at the local community college. If I edit out that stuff I guarantee you locals that view it would notice

I would have taken down the exposure a bit and gotten a nice silhouette of the tree.

alissasanderson,

I'll defend your rainbow because Mother Nature put a cloud filled with moisture between camera and sun, producing - what else?

I see a pole right of the tree; if it's normally vertical, then a little rotate would give a bit more levelosity. Picky, hunh?

The blowout? Even if all you did was color it sky-blue, you keep the drama, lose the critique issue. (see "Sun and Ice")

What is the landmark?

Jiminy:

I'm not sure of the historical significance of the tree specifically, but a few years ago it was the center of a huge controversy when the college wanted to cut it down and use the space for more parking. There were demonstrations around the tree itself, and picketers, and tons of letters to the editor of the local newspaper. That tree was in the paper at least once a week, every week, for months.

They ended up adding more parking on the other end of campus.

I like the idea of coloring the blowout blue...I'll give it a shot.

the first reaction that I had was wow! Its a good looking shot and I love the sky, both in the blown out section and non-blownout. The first thing that I noticed after studying this great shaped tree was the road at the bottom left, I understand if you changes the locale it might bother you or other locals, if it were up to me I would 1>try to crop it out (it looks like that might take too much off and butt the tree up to the bottom) 2> I would clone. That way I can enjoy the great contrasts in the main subjects....great shot

alissasanderson,

Don't hit me: did you apply an overall blue? The rainbow and some of the tree glow are lost. If you isolate (lasso, select) the corner so the blue only fills that area, better?

Does bottom crop bother you as much as seeing the road?
