Default Sensuous

Fuji S3100 Night Mode f/8 -1.5 EV Bright sun

One of many incredible sculptural results of wind on snow drift. For anyone not in deep snow country, the shadows do have a blue cast.

Nice shot - it is like an angel's wing!

Taking a look at the largest size over on your Flickr account, my only gripe would be that no portion of the shot appears in sharp focus. I think you might get an even better end result by getting a more in-focus shot (manual focussing might be needed - I can imagine autofocus struggling on a scene like this) and then softening it as required in post processing.

However, it looks great, especially when viewed at a smaller size as above. Glad to see that you're making good use of all the white stuff!

wulf,

We called Kuwait and they don't want it either, so I just started paying attention to it.
My valiant little Fuji has no manual focus. If I start using a tripod and maybe use a definite object placed in snow to focus on (and then remove), some sharpness may result? This one had so much noise (underexposed), I softened it a little, even Despeckled. It's like taking a Macro of a cotton ball.

I'll show one later with the "angel's wing" observation even more pronounced. Thanks for comments and advice.

Nicely captured. The only thing I might like to see is a little more contrast in the shadows... help enhance the "wing" look, and perhaps a slight cropping of the left side. Aside from that I quite like the softness of the shot, and can imagine the frustration of dealing with auto-focus on a windy snow drift

KagoGrl,

Thanks for noticing the softness. The peculiarity of snow, layers of tiny ice crystals, is its malleability. The constant wind takes it a step up from the 'snowman' sculpture.

I haven't found a reliable formula yet for photographing or post-processing snow that would get a really deep shadow without losing either the highs or the "snowness.' On the roof yesterday shoveling over 3 feet of the stuff, we were noticing that it also allows light to penetrate deeply without creating much more than a blue-grey dimness.

wulf,

The one I thought of when you said "angel's wing:

Nice! I love the little ridges - colourise this with tans and oranges and it would look just like a desert.

I love great titles for pictures, probably because I'm so bad at it . Sensuous was good, angel wing really is wonderful. And your shots really do look like angel wings, Jiminy.
