Default Skyline

I recently got a Canon Rebel XTi and am working on night shots of skylines and wanted to get some feedback on a picture I took.

Great looking skyline! are those light trails from a boat or something?
I think they are a bit of a distraction for me..not enough to make them a focal point.
Is this a cropped version or is it straight from camera? I rally like the look of left side but think the right side seems to get dark......you could almost split the two into portrait shots and frame them side by side.

I really like this image there is adaquete depth of field in this image everything seems very sharp. The bridge on the left also helps by adding a little depth to the image which makes it more intresting. I do however find the light trails from the boat to be a little distracting. I would have reshot the image after the boat left but they look easy enough to clone out. I think the cool colors in contrast with the warm tops of the building and the bridge really keep your eyes focused in on the image the reflection of course makes this even stronger.

I have a few questions for you

1. Why did you over expose the image one stop the reason I ask is some of the highlights look a little blow out what I've found works best is to under expose the image just a little no more then one stop which is usually enough to retain a little more detail in the highlights. It's much t easier in post processing to bring some shadows out then fix the highlights.

2. What lens did you use?

3. What post processing have you done?

4. How long have you been doing photography?

Great work I can't stop staring at your image.

This pic is not cropped. The light trails are from a barge that was passing through. I did take some without the boat in the shot.

I actually did not mean to over expose the shot. I used the Canon 18-55mm that came with the camera. I adjusted the levels slightly and sharpened it a bit in Photoshop, but no major post processing. I haven't been in photography that long. I just got my camera in December. I had a point and shoot Canon A75 before and loved, but just recently (last couple of months) started reading up on digital photography. It's something I love to do and want to get better at. Hobby for now, but who knows...
