I'm a very new, yet eager to learn, person who owns a camera....at
what point do you call yourself a "photographer," if ever?

I'm curious to see what additional/different elements could have
been done to make this a stronger photo?

Thanks in advance!

wine bottle and corks

I like the subjects but not the composition.
The corks hide the wine bottle. The bottle being a new bottle looks odd laying over on its side.
I would have stood it up and added an empty bottle coming at the camera on its side. Then the corks strewn around in front of the bottles.
Seems a bit underexposed to me too.

As for calling yourself a photographer.....?
THere is an entire thread for this over in the general Chat section. Head on over there and take a look and keep shooting!

Thanks for the great feedback....I'm still so new, it doesn't seem appropriate to even post a photo on DPS.

Hi. My humble opinion...
I like the sharpness of this picture. I will assume that the background was supposed to be white, or if not, I think that would improve this photo. So maybe a bit white balance adjustment would help. That would add a bit more contrast. Or you can try to work on it in post processing. That could solve the problem with exposure as well...
Also, I would love to see more from the surrounding of the main subject, I mean a shot with a wider angle.
Enjoy shooting, it's a lot of fun!

This is what I did which, by no means, is what you should have done. Since the color of the capsule is orange and there are corks scattered around, I emphasized the warm tones of the photo. I found the histogram showed a slight underexposure, so I moved it towards the right side. Added some contrast and cropped the photo to show a "defferent element standing out".

I think the picture is great, it is a little dark though. one bit of advise might be to try and stand the bottle up with the corks around the bottom of the bottle.

first question: In my humble opinion, calling yourself a photographer comes when you cant leave home without your camera, you love what you are doing, enjoying photography! I call myself a photographer because I absolutely love it!! I see life differently now that I have picked up a camera, I have completely fallen in love with it. I can't go anywhere without saying to myself, "wow that will make a great shot". I dont by ANY means call myself a professional photographer at all.

second question: I like this shot. I like the subject. I do agree that the bottle should be standing. Maybe less corks, and if I was shooting it, I would have added a splash of some kind of color, a flower, fruit, a colorful wine glass standing in the background, fill the glass with wine and have grapes trailing down the side of it. Just some sort of color. Thats just my opinion. I think you are doing a very good job and always keep shooting!

I think Nai no Kami's edit is excellent and improves the result a lot, both by cropping and lightening the result (although it was too big, grumble, grumble, read the rules, grumble, grumble ). In particular, it makes a lot more of the contrast between the sealed bottle top and the pile of corks - finding a repeated object and introducing on thing that is similar but also noticeably different is a well-established way of creating an interesting result.

This is a very stylish shot.
If I had seen this photo in the pages of Wine Connissuer Magazine, I would not have have considered that this was anything but a professional shot (with one slight exception - the foremost cork is out of focus and I only noticed that on close inspection)
I love the warmth of the picture.
You married subject and style in clever way. The used corks are a great idea and you can see the saturation of wine into the cork which gives the shot another dimension, the experience of anyone who has just uncorked a bottle and the smell of the wine - it was the first thing I thought of when I looked at your picture.
I think the light and tone of your picture is just right.
If you are new to photography, I would say, from this photograph, that you have an intuitive grasp of commercial layout.

Cheers.

Sorry, Wulf. I din't know how to achieve the resizing. I checked the edit you made. I will not happen again.
