Cool DoF Texture Shot

Bark Texture

Camera: Canon EOS 400D Digital
Exposure: 0.008 sec (1/125)
Aperture: f/4.5
Focal Length: 34 mm
ISO Speed: 400
Exposure Bias: 0/3 EV
Flash: Flash did not fire

Just starting photography with a DSLR I got for xmas, this was Day 1, Hour 1. So I was basically getting use to the camera settings.

As an early shot in using a DSLR you've done well. I remember the thrill of being able to take pictures with a deliberately narrow Depth of Field (in fact, it still thrills me!) and you've got that here.

Casting a more critical eye, I would say that you have probably gone a bit too narrow here and it would be a better picture if more of the bark was in focus. Stopping down from f/4.5 to f/5.6 would probably have been enough to accomplish that.

While you get the hang of DoF, it is probably worth taking shots at several apertures (aperture priority mode is very helpful for this) and then comparing the results.

Many thanks for the advice wulf!

Ill try to expand my shots with a lower aperture from now on.
I guess I do seem to go for the extremes currently, i.e. v.high or v.low.
