I too spent morning working on 'product' shots. Must be the day for it.
I have a soft spot for gargoyles and like the light & b&w in this one. I wonder if it could be a bit sharper? Just my thoughts

adacosta,

This is a huge post. I don't believe it complies with posting regs. At the top of page one are some really good instructions and guidelines for posting and critiquing.

Interesting statute.

This is my personal view, but the DOF on this is really messing with my eyes. Try it with a smaller arperture. Seems that with a subject like this, it may be better to get as much of it in focus as possible.

I really like this but then I'm probably biased.

I think the smal DoF makes my cousin look much larger than he is.

Default dof

Sorry about the large image post.

I was playing with the DOF and shot many exposures, I was wondering if this one would be a little odd with the small DOF at 3.2. and as you commented perhaps it is.

thanks very much for your replies.

adacosta,

Your turn: help me to understand what thoughts led you to the crop? Or framing, if this is OOC? The corners of the base are cut in varying amounts, and the wing is almost out of frame. I see this often and hope to get insight into how the decision is made?

I think the arm/elbow is one in focused... I think it would be better if the face is in focus... No matter where I look, my eyes tend to focus on the arm/elbow...

No Jiminy, you are correct, i would have to say not much thought did go into the framing.

all notes for me to consider for future, to be worked on. this is my first 'staged' product shoot, and while i usually do like to play with DOF in my photos (his right eye being the point of focus) i would state that DOF does not work to well in this particular product shot. and the framing is off.

Thanks very much for your comments.

Also i am not familiar with the acronym OOC?

adacosta,

My fault: I try to spell out nearly everything, not knowing who will know what. But I'm looking at 6 pages of Critique right now, and may abbreviate at times:

OOC . . . Out Of Camera
OOF . . . Out Of Focus (in composition . . . Out Of Frame)
