Default Non-conformity, shining, standing out

From Geotography

Certainly it was fun to go to my local hardware store and pick up the talent for this shot. My hardware store always has fresh, delicious popcorn; so you can walk around and munch while shopping....back to the photo: f/4.5, ISO 250, 38mm focal length. I initially attempted this experimental composition with candles; however, the results were not what I was after. So I flipped on the tungsten light in the closet I was shooting in and got this. Only a few small adjustments were made in post work. Thank anyone wishing to critique for your comments on how to improve.

I love this! It's an awesome concept and greatly executed. The DoF is just great.

However, I think I would have framed it differently so that more of the taller nails closer to the foreground were completely in the frame so you could really compare the heights. Also, I wish the background was a bit brighter.

Other than that, it's awesome. Nice shot!

I like the idea but find the colors of the nails and screw are being muted in with the background. More so the nails. A bit of light and a total black background or a vivid color might make them stand out a bit more.
Also it appears the focus is not entirely right on the screw head. Seems soft. Was this handheld? IF you try this again try leaving distance between the mail before and the nail after so neither are in focus as much as the screw.
I really like the idea you got here!

Thanks mates for having a look. Specifically,

@aperthetic: good point on the framing and I agree on the lightening up a bit. I will do that and put it on my accessible web album.

@filemanager: thanks for positive encouragement.

@Liz Caldwell: You are welcome for .

@xxpinballxx: I see what you mean about the muted nails. As for the focus, I agree with you. In answer to your question, I did not hand hold; I try to use a tripod every chance I get. I could use some coaching from you on that. First, you know the lens I am using may be one of the variables here. Secondly, I often use auto-focus and then go in and fine tune my focus manually before releasing the shutter. I am mostly shooting RAW and then do some tuning. In more cases than not, I am so gunshy about sharpening too much in Picasa2 or Fastone because I often do not like the effect...just too artificial for me. So, I have yet to graduate to better post production software. I would appreciate anything you can share. I thought I would run awhile with this kit lens and then go do the deed to procure my second lens. I realize that good photography comes from it all: experience, skills and good gear. THANKS for listening and for your help and positive encouragement.
