Rex,
I like the composition. Subject is powerful upon the black background. I think it could be better with more light in the subject's eyes. I think I am seeing some photo noise. What was your ISO setting?

Welcome to the forums the waters great just jump in!
Great portrait! I like the lighting...a bit more harsh than most use. The eyes could be brought out a bit in post. There doesn't seem to be any noise to me and at ISO 200 that really shouldnt be an issue. How did you light this shot?

Did you cut him out and paste him on the black background? I guess I'm finding the glow on the fringes of his hair to be rather out of place.

Hi Rex:
I like the photo, composition and lighting too. My only suggestion is about the halo light the subject has in his hair, I found it a little distracting. Maybe some post processing can take care of it. Nice shot, thanks for sharing it and of course Welcome to the forum!

I think the backlight is a little strong try moving the subject further from the backlight source also I think you could use a small keylight on the left side to bring some shadow detail out in the hair and eyes. I like the post and compostion the lighting however I feel is a tad harsh. The backlight could work if another keylight was used on the left as well. Nice work keep it up

I agree it really looks cut out of a white background and placed on the black. Either dim down the backlight or practice up in photoshop =) Like the shot though, great character.

Thanks for the great feedback. Apologies, should have included data with the photo: Canon XT, Sigma 18-200 lens, ISO 200, 1/60 @ f5.6.
Hey you guys are good! The original (I photoshopped it a fair bit) was rather dark so I cranked up the exposure which brought out the grain. Also it was a grab shot while we were setting up some lighting and hence had some background stuff, so I used the lasso tool to select the background and clone stamp it to black. Hence the cut-out look that you noticed. I think in the future I might be better off just taking a good photo in the first place .... :-). Thanks again for the feedback and positive comments. |
