The actual cityscape is wonderfully exposed and sharp in this scene. I also love the time of day it was shot, the lighting is beautiful. What distracts me is the underexposed foreground and the railing - it's not really the focus of the photo and distracts from the interesting stuff going on above it.
I think this photo can be greatly improved by simply cropping the image to remove pretty much the whole bottom half of the photo, leaving a wide, panoramic-like image. Also, the sky in that photo is amazing!

Indeed that is the photo that I use on my blog, and it has been cropped. I always knew that the railing should go, but would still love to hear any other thoughts that anyone might have.
Cheers, Rod

Okay, I admit I like this shot not even for any artistic reasons (though the colors are nice, and I do agree about the railing), but because I know exactly where it is. I love Granville Island myself; I've taken various pictures there.
I'm in Seattle, often spend time in Vancouver, and always crash on my friend's futon in the False Creek area when I do. My own shot of the area at night was taken looking at the same skyscrapers, from just past the little curve of grey townhomes. So for me, this picture resonates in an "It's a small world!" way. (Plus, I always love how the area looks in morning and evening light.) |

Thanks. I do need to get to Granville Island more often, as it's always a good source of things to shoot.
