Default driving, snow, and the auto show...

i went to the chicago auto show yesterday and took some pictures. i realized my 17-40 f4 was not as fast as i'd want. had the iso bumped up to 800 the entire time. could have gone to 1600, but i dont have noise reduction software and wanted them to come out as clean as possible.

i've never made a collage before, so this was my first attempt. thoughts?

while it was snowing the other day. handheld

a few months back i took a shot inside my car with a longer shutter. i wanted to try using my flash and retaking it. for whatever reason i could not get my tripod situated properly and it was too tall to use my diffuser, so i angled my flash a little bit and used a red flash gel and remote release. not exactly what i was hoping for, but it's different. next up a different focal length and a wireless remote

Matt, sorry I missed these. I try to look at every posting each day, but sometimes I miss a few. As this forum gets busier, it can happen more often. Thanks for mentioning it and bringing it back to the top . We 350D owners have to look out for each other .

The following comments are just MHO. I'm not too crazy about the car show shots. Are they noisey or OOF, or is it my computer screen? I like your b&w. Really gives a feeling of speed. I like the foreground and background in the shot, too, and the choice of b&w makes it seem a little grittier and almost impersonal (rushing through the city, no time to take notice of anything).

We were scheduled for a car show here in Pittsburgh this past week, but part of our fairly new convention center collapsed, so it's been rescheduled.

i was real disappointed with a lot of my auto show pictures. i couldn't get the shutter speeds i was hoping for even with the ISO bumped up to 800! it's time for me to get a noise reduction program so i can go up to 1600 and get better results. but yeah, that's the reason they're as noisy as they are.

collapsed?! crazy!

mdwsta4,

You know it's not a 100% about the photos on the forum, as with most everything in life. When I see more than one photo, and they load oversized, and the post lists reasons for shortcomings in photo, I tend to move on. If it hadn't come around again, I wouldn't have seen this post.

If b/w slow shutter shot had shown by itself without negative comment, I would have stopped and looked. As Saralonde notes, more photos, less time.

i used to shoot autoshow coverage photos back in the day urbanempires.com was still in business. so your coverage of the volkswagen booth is good, lol, ive been to that show twice this year, its fun.
as for the snow photo, i love the angle and hight you shot it from, but shoot at different times of the day, the traffic you got in the shot could be better, but you gor the right idea.
the in car shot, i like the gadges, thats sweet...im gunna guess its a euro car, lol.
good times though.

not sure what you mean by the first comment as this is the 'critique my shot' forum meaning it's exactly for the photos (correct me if i'm wrong).
i also think it'd be easier or more preferable to make one post with 4 photos than 4 seperate posts cluttering up the forums. unless you think it would be better to make one thread and have 3 replies in it with one picture each?
and what negative comment are you referring to?

cheers

Of all your shots I like the b&w snow one best. As Saralone said it portrays a feeling of speed and urgency. I like that you managed to keep the foreground and background still and in focus, really enhances the motion on the road. The only thing I might change is to move the composition a little to the right, placing the lampost more to the left - I can't explain why, I just find it a little too close to center, but not close enough for me to think of it as centered - does that make sense?

As for the car show shots - I think I would much prefer a collage of car shots than a the collection of miscellanious shots... but that's just my opinion.

Sorry to have missed your post until now, I usually try to comment on as many as I have time for... I have posted a few shots on here myself and have received only 1 (if any) response and that irks me (why have a critique forum if people are only prepared to critique the shots they like).

In any case, I like your b&w shot and look forward to seeing some more of your work.

Default The B & W Image

I second (or third) the vote for the black and white. My eyes stayed on that image longer than any other in your posting. the movement and lack of color made it more dramatic and sharpness came thru also.

I third (or fourth) the vote for the black and white. I like how the blurry traffic really defines the foreground and background. As photobyfelix said, I tended to stay focused on that photo the longest.
