Default Black Headed Gull in flight

Black Headed Gull

Hi Everyone, I am new to digital and went out with my new Canon 400D, using a EF 70-300 4-5.6 IS USM Lens. Any comments on how to improve would be very welcome.

Very nice work! I like the direction of flight (may want to leave a little more 'nose' room in front of the bird). Background is OK (slightly distracting through its color and sense of motion) but it separates nicely from the bird. I realize you probably had no choice for this particular shot. Enjoy your new camera and lens. I look forward to seing more of your work.

Bobcat63,

Like your photo. You really froze the bird in flight. I would have enjoyed more light exposure upon the underside of its closest wing. I am only guessing that you were zoomed in quite a bit with that EF 70-300; what was the focal length? Is your blur in background all DOF or did you add an effect?

Nice Photo!

Thanks for your comments. Lens was on full zoom and I did not use any effects to blur background out....was on "sport setting mode"
Just got lucky I guess!

Actually according to the data on Flickr the lens was not on full zoom, it was at 225mm. You might want to try a little fill lighting to see if you can bring some detail back to the underside of the wing - otherwise nice shot.

Great capture! Birds in flight are tough, and I commend you for both good framing and good focus! (I need work on both with my bird shots!)
