Default Overcast

I'm a newbie so be kind.

I personally think that the center is a little overexposed, and the sky was total overcast... you could hardly see any detail by eye let alone with the camera. I guess should've cropped more of the sky out. However, I still love that fork in the bayou!

i like your composition as it takes my eye from the foreground all the way back to the bend in the bayou....

however, i feel the scene as a whole is too contrasted and you have lost a lot of detail in the shadows.....if you are not opposed to post processing, i would suggest you "brighten" the shadows....

thanks for sharing....

Tralfamadorian,

"Kind" is subjective; could I just give a viewpoint that you may use or not, in a way that neither insults nor condescends?

The elbow touching the left side of frame is called a "kiss," and is a distracting element that can easily be avoided by either moving camera before shot, or subject, to include more space between frame and subject, or crop a significant part of the arm. The kiss shows uncertainty and tightness in a photo. I would try to put subject's head on the thirds line, and in front of either the sky or the water.

My camera has a Simple mode that allows for back-lit scenes such as this. The only other way I know to avoid blowouts and dead subjects in a shot like this is to throw some light on your subject.

Thank you all for the advice.

Would this crop fix the "kiss" problem?

Tralfamadorian,

Works for me, even the whole perimeter "less is more" brings the fork closer. Do you still like it?

Yeah, I like it a lot more because its more from the perspective of my brother which I think gives the picture more depth. Thanks
