Default First Post - Newbie

I'm very new into the world of photography and have started out with a Nikon D40X with a Tamron AF18-250mm F/3.5-6.3 lense. I bought the camera as i was doing a trip to Africa. Took 1500 plus photos with varying degrees of success. Here's one i'd appreciate some feedback on.

Take a close look. To the left and right are nothing. Above his head is a beautiful head-dress that is missing from the shot. Below his head is a georgeous robe that can't be seen.

There is so much missing from this picture, and so much added to the picture.

Hmmmm.
I think franken just summed it up!
The contrast has been managed very well, just consider a portrait framing in such shots. Horizontal framing looks good when the subject is leanbing outta the frame or looking at the sides.
This image has too much empty space.

normreed, Welcome

How will you use this photo? How did this person feel about the image? The squint from the bright Sun is causing his "soul windows" to almost disappear, so two of the best parts of a human face are all but lost. Different time of day and a turn sideways may have helped you here, going from a good photo to a better portrait.

Thanks for the feedback - appreciate the comments. The photo will be used mainly for record of trip. The person was very happy with the shot.

normreed,

After all is said and done, that's all we could want: photographer and subject both pleased. Good job.

Default Another similar shot

[QUOTE=FrankenPengie;89111]Take a close look. To the left and right are nothing. Above his head is a beautiful head-dress that is missing from the shot. Below his head is a georgeous robe that can't be seen.

I had another photo of the same subject although i personally preferred the first picture.

Thanks for the comments. I assume this one addresses the head-dress and robe aspect - i not that a portrait shot would have been better. I think this one is also a little out of focus.
