Default Snowy Sunset

I just wanted some opinions on this shot...

Snowy Sunset

Exposure: 1/2500 sec
Aperture: f/8
Focal Length: 7.4 mm
ISO Speed: 100
Exposure Bias: 0/3 EV

I took it into post-processing and made a few curves and saturation adjustments, and also cropped it a bit.

I just wanted to see some other opinions about this shot. Anything I should have done differently? Anything I can do to improve it through post-processing? Thanks in advance!

Hi Aperthetic,

The beams radiating outward from the sun are very powerful. I am struggling a bit with the first third of the foreground. Questions: Is this your backyard? Would you have opportunity to try this again? One idea that surfaced was to stage a set of tracks traversing (at an angle towards the house) upon the front portion of the photo. Another thing to ask: how important is the snow in this shot because my first reaction to the snow was that it made me think of beach sand. While I like that amber color, it doesn't seem to represent snow. So perhaps a graduated tint of some sort to maintain the quality you have produced at the top portion of the photo. Thanks for sharing this photo.

I really enjoy the top part of the photo you got here...the bottom part is a bit distracting with the foot prints...a good crop I think would help out and make it a great shot.

Aperthetic, Welcome

Do you have other photos from minutes later, when those spiky tree shadows are longer? That would seem to add some interest, maybe enough to go more for the lighter whiter look.

Yes, this is my backyard. I haven't had a chance to "recreate" this scene considering our temperatures have been up in the 60's ever since, but I believe we're getting some snow over the next few days. Hopefully, I will get a similar situation to recreate the shot. I'll have to try that out with the footprints as well, as long as my pup doesn't beat me to it.

I'll have to play around with that in Photoshop to see if I can produce something different. Also, if I get the chance to take the shot again, maybe I can try some different exposure settings.

Thanks, I'll see how it looks.

I didn't get the chance to shoot anymore, but once again, if I get the chance, I'll surely try that. The need for whiter snow seems to be a consensus.

Thanks everyone for all your tips! I appreciate them.

I was going to say, sounds like Pennsylvania, where I'm at. Then I noticed the "shot in: Pennsylvania" on Flickr. Also, shot on Jan. 2nd. Here's mine shot on Jan. 2nd, only 80 miles north of you and looks like about half an hour after yours (43 minutes actually, according to exif), hehehe.

Don't call for more snow PLEASE!!! We get enough up here on I-80. You get 2 inches, we end up with 12!
