Default Plaza Lights

I could use help on how to effectively capture the angle of a building because something doesn't seem right here. I am not crazy about all the parked cars. I guess I am not really impressed with the photo...oh sure the lights are festive but something is missing in my approach. This was a nocturnal experiment with my bulb mode, tripod and ear muffs. Thanks for any input you can offer.

Hi Geotography --

Will you permit me to make a suggestion, which I am hoping you will receive in the spirit in which it is offered?

For my own part, I generally tend not to look at photos by members who often put multiple photos per day in the Critique forum. It is nothing against you or your photos, and I don't think there is any rule against it, but with limited time on my hands I would rather spend it looking at submissions from many members than just one. Call me a so******t.

I don't know if there are others around here who go at it the same way I do, but I suspect your photos might receive more and better attention if you spaced your submissions out a bit, and that way we can ensure the limited critical resources around here are spread around.

Please do keep submitting -- I am not intending at all to discourage you on that front. Put a couple a day in Critique, and put the surplus in some of the areas we have around here for posting photos. For that matter, let me encourage you to keep critiquing as well -- you may find you learn as much about photography by looking at other people's photos as you do from having your own critiqued.

Cheers,

EL

Elay,

Yes; and received in the true spirit in which it was intended. Your expressed thoughts have crossed my mind a few times and I appreciate you helping me to be more conscious about those points. I was taking batch processing too far. I concur that balancing my time between review and posting is good for all the reasons you pointed out.

Sincere Thanks,

Well put ELAy and Geo you have some good shots but he has a point. Posting many shots in a single sitting will throw images from members to the second page and may get overlooked all together. I am well aware of the eagerness you are feeling to get better at your photography. I think we all go through it at some point in some fashion or another.

I found that most places in this forum people will still give a bit of a critique to the photo. So its not critical to get them all on this page. Like the landscape and people and macro sections are basically the same as this only more focused on a specific type of shot.

With that said.....I find this shot is more of a snap shot of a time and place rather than a shot set out to be a great shot. I dont mean that in a bad way just that the tree branches in front of the shot and the cars being a distraction. Also the closeness of the right edge to the building. I think if this had a bit of space around it and a time when there were no cars it would make a much better shot.
Keep up the enthusiastic outlook to photography and practice the fine art of picking the right images to showcase your work.
In this photo you even mentioned you basically aren't thrilled with it. So why not skip this post and find that next great one that you feel has potential?

xxpinballxx,

Thank you too for your sage advice. I feel honored to be socialized into this community by individuals who have gained experience and higher consciousness. While this is all a very new experience for me, I am grateful to be welcomed and brought along by others.

Best,

it truly is a very different type of forum...especially since there is so much respect for each other and friendly atmosphere. Most sites with critique sections always have the jerks that just flame everyone.

Hey geo, I'm really a nOOb and have no idea what I'm talking about but I find posting critiques a good learning experience. I'm often afraid I'll say something stOOpid but I do anyway to learn. When you know you're going to be posting something for everyone to see, you really study what you're about to talk about instead of looking at a pic and deciding if you like it or not. I see some big numbers viewing this corner of the forum and few critiques. I encourage all to speak up.

geotography,

Your photo illustrates the point, also: there are 40+ potential subjects in this one shot, so I'm asking "What am I being shown?" Compare rlarsen's Golden Doors: detailed, obvious subject, I know what to comment on. A good landscape is helped by a leading foreground. Your storefronts have interesting individual stories, and could still serve as subjects.

Sorting your photos might help you decide: ones you know need help, Critique can advise you. Ones you know are good, show them in Share Your Shots, previous Assignments threads, Games and Challenges. Unusual circumstances, How I Took It. Post work, Before and After.
