Post New in the block

Hi there ,
I was just surfing around when I ended up here and decided to try to see if I can bring in some fresh wind. I’m in photography for about a year now and enjoying it very much. Well here some examples of what I did in the past and I would love to her all your remarks / comments.

Here is my contribution:

Bark and Lichen - Monochrome

The original was my favourite picture from all that I took in 2006:

Bark and Lichen

I used The Gimp. First I took two copies of the image, desaturated one with the built-in command (quick but quite flat) and desaturated the other using the channel mixer. I then merged the two together to get a balance I liked.

Next, I took a copy of the composite monochrome image, blurred it by 10px and set the new layer in overlay mode. Opacity was adjusteded to 40%, which increased the contrast without going over the top. That was all flattened and saved as greyscale to give my final result.

I still prefer the original image, as the colours were very complementary and helped pick out the blobs of lichen, but am also happy with this monochrome version.

Erik Kuipers,

Welcome to our part of the ocean.

First photo: simple in the best possible way
Second: powerful in b/w
Third: undecided about the cut-off fence

For really thorough attention, try the "Critique my shot" threads.

My first post here...

I took this picture of Mary Arden's childhood home (William Shakespeare's mother) last year but converted it to black and white yesterday using Adobe Lightroom Beta 4.1.
