Default Detroit Institute of Arts - DIA Statute in B&W

I like to go through the DIA and take shots using extreme close-up, shadow or reflected natural light rather than a perfectly framed exact representational shot .
This one was shot in color but came out looking like black and white so I desaturated it all the way.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Light striking the statue is natural winter sun from a nearby window.
Circles of light in the frame are electric chandeliers reflecting in the plexiglas shield protecting the statue. No flash was used.

Here's an old one. Taken in "real" b/w, as it was negative film.

This one is more recent, taken with a digital camera, so in color and somehow black-and-whitened. With a lot of contrast. (The website it is on seems to be suffering though, so perhaps it won't come through).

I have some more in this series, will post them as soon as the website is on-line again.

Default Rob-Carr method

(my first post to this forum )

A picture of my oldest daughter taken while on holiday in Croatia. The picture was taken in BW, but was enhanced using the Rob Carr Color to B&W Conversion Technique. (http://weblog.slower.net/archives/3).

The optimised photo is more dynamic and interesting. A general tip for digital B/W photography: Shoot in colour (or raw) and convert to bw in post processing.

Last weekend, I built my own light tent (using the tutorial on the blog) and started shooting pictures for a Valentine's Day present that, sadly, never came to fruition. Just didn't have the creative juices flowing enough to follow through with everything I wanted to do with it... it was to be a framed collection of photos of a few of my boyfriend's favorite things. These are my favorite 2 pictures from the batch that I shot.

Anyway, I shot RAW, in color, fixed a lot of contrast before converting to JPEG, and converted to B&W in Photoshop using the channel mixer.
