Default Assignment:Economy

buddha

Commodities on re-sale and special discounts -
War, peace, religion, ethnic conflicts and humanitarian rescues.
As I window shop, I miss the explosive word of the revolutionary yesteryears -- "வெங்காயம்!"

I walked with my hands buried inside my pockets;
I missed a step and slipped in to a proverbial flashback.
Father never kept it a secret.

A booming voice (almost 'god'-like) shouting out THERE'S NO GOD,
resonated in our house, eternally.
However, mother did save a little corner for the 'gods' to take refuge in.
Occasionally I would peep in to 'light the lamp',
bumped into those multifarious Hindu ones and also an 'infant Jesus', that mother's convent schooling allowed.

I remember searching for an idol of Allah or Mohammed,
grew up later to find it in Father's book shelves - books on Islam.
Stumbled on many other 'othered' religions as well.

Being a non-believer at a young age came with the pseudo sense of intellectual superiority.
Atheism and resistance to falsehood, cheap forms of rebellion,
were my sanctuary.

Temples for me were unhygienic with no breathing space.
Images of bare bodies ordained with an ugly white thread caused further nausea.
The acts of the devotees and the devoted made me respect none.

Now, my 'spiritual' world is clearly empty and seamless.
I revel in it.
The guillotined head of buddha spiced up with pennies,
sits there under the light as dummy decor and photography learning material.

Sometimes 'enlightenment' comes in unsophisticated packages,
and our endearment towards it,
leaves us with a mythical self .

Default Assignment: The Economy

The title for this photo is: It used to be full

This is the parking lot of an office building which used to be always full to the extent that some times employees will have to park outside the building. Since the downturn on the economy this is what is left... nothing.
