Default Assignment: "Two for One" Aug. 12 - Aug. 26

NOTE: This is a two part post because of the amount of images used as examples.

Are you ready for "Two for One"? We want to see two images of the same subject changing one key setting, eg. shutter speed for motion freezing / blur, focal length, aperture setting, etc. How does it effect your image? Do you like one better than the other? Are you struck in a rut of doing the same thing all the time? You might be surprised how one simple change can make a world of difference.

Basically you take a pic, note your settings, then take another pic of the same subject with one thing changed. See what a small change can do make a different type of shot.

I went out yesterday and tried a few pictures setting my camera on Av mode, changing one thing, and then letting the camera adjust if it wanted to. I changed focal length, focal point, ISO, aperture settings, and point of view. Obviously the last one isn't a camera setting change, but a positional one. Setting your camera on Manual will allow you to make changes without your camera adjusting for you, but if you're not comfortable with that, Av will do. If you have a camera that will not allow you to change settings, try a change in perspective by changing your own position.

You can put your images up as a diptych or 2 separate shots. And please note why you prefer one over the other and what you changed.

Here are a few examples. Most are SOOC.

As always, rules:
Please note the change in closing time.

Just a note to new posters: DO NOT start a new thread for your post. Please just hit the reply button at the bottom of any current post and put your image there.

1. Your original image you submit should be taken between the 12th of Aug. and the 26th of August. Each week as an assignment closes on the Wednesday, it will be AUTOMATICALLY deemed *CLOSED* after 8am GMT ( 3am EST) and any posts after that time will not be eligible for the assignment competition. Don't wait until the last minute to post!

2. Your post must include "Assignment: Two for One" (to show your permission to count it for the contest) and the date the picture was taken (to show that it is a valid entry).

3. EXIF data should be intact. It helps if you can include the main points (including camera, lens, date taken, ISO, shutter speed and aperture) in the text of your message.

4. Only one entry per member (if you can't restrain yourself until the end of the first week you can post two or three separate pictures but your entry should be in a separate post and the only marked with the text above). It must be an original image taken by you.

5. Remember the cross-site image size limit (800px on the longest side).

6. If the image does not exist in post at the end of the contest, it is disqualified. If you modify anything on flickr and re-save the image then the link is broken and the message needs edited to link the picture again before it will be included in the contest.
For everyone, please do not repeat other people's photos by quoting them until the contest is over. If you want to comment on or discuss an entry you can use a link to it (or just delete the picture from the quoted text).

7. If you are looking for the winners of the mini-contest, please check the front page of the DPS blog Saturday late afternoon (EST) and here.

Next week our subject is "Weather". Let's see pictures that show weather or it's effects.

Default subject question...

Is it ok if the subject is moving and we change something? I took some pics of my son at the skate park but changed focus point. Didn't know if the subject had to be EXACTLY the same position, spot, etc....

Be creative. If you are just changing the point of focus and everything else about the scene is changing it will be two different photos and probably won't grab the eye of the judges. However, if your son is in the same position in the frame for a couple of shots but you have changed the shutter speed then I could see that working (especially if you are cunning about lighting so that both shots are well exposed even though only the shutter speed is different).

We are looking for a pair of attention grabbing shots that illustrate what a difference changing just one camera-related setting can make.

Wulf

ps. ... and I'm very happy when there is a bit of explanation given about what changed and how you see the resulting difference

Default Assignment: Two for One

This is my shot of a roadside waterfall in the Olympic National Forest.

The quick shutter speed stopped the action in the first shot. I slowed the shutter speed in Shutter Priority Mode to capture the flow of the water in the second shot. I like the first shot because you can see the texture of the water where as in the second shot the water melts into an artsy even flow. The exposure was darkened a little in post production to tone down the brightness of the plant life.

Default Assignment: Two for One

From the trial shots changing shutter speed, focal length and aperture, I decided I like the last one best.

"Loose cannon":

Two for One (1)

Two for One (2)

Tucked away in the barrel of this rather old cannon is a little LED flashlight. I like the star shape that the Sigma lens throws at small lens openings.

Date pictures taken: August 19, 2009
EXIF:
Camera: Nikon D40
Exposure: 3s
Aperture: f/36.0 ------> on photo 2: f/10.0
Focal Length: 80 mm
ISO Speed: 200
Exposure Bias: 0 EV
Flash: No Flash

Default Not for Assignment, unfortunately

Here's an example of a photos taken at the same time, using all the same settings, but using a different focal point. These were taken a year ago, so it isn't eligible.

Camera: Olympus E-510
Exposure: 0.004 sec (1/250)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 76 mm
ISO Speed: 400
Exposure Bias: 0 EV
Flash: On, Did not fire

Charlie!

The difference is I used flash on the second photo. I prefer it with out flash, as you can see the background better, and changes the mood of the photo, and you can see her freckles better! The flash also changed the shutter speed, to get a correct exposure.

Exif Photo One:
Camera: Nikon D40
Exposure: 0.001 sec (1/1250)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 300 mm
ISO Speed: 800
Exposure Bias: 0 EV
Flash: No Flash

Exif Photo Two:
Camera: Nikon D40
Shutter Speed: 1/500
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 300 mm
ISO Speed: 800
Flash: Fired
