Default Assignment: "Machinery"

One of the things I most love about these assignments is the variety of shots and interpretations of the subject you get.

This is the sand bypassing system at The Spit on the Gold Coast. It pumps about 500,000 cubic meters of sand from the spit to South Stradbroke Island each year....that's a lot of sand!

After looking at these photos I'm in a tight competition which is good news. It takes all the pressure off.
This is my first attempt at a submission. Naturally I have issues with the photograph but if I wait for one that I approve of it will probably never happen. sigh If only I could learn to hold the camera straight.

This photo was taken this morning.
It is of a gas burner. The reflection in the background must be from the flash, and if you look closely in the reflection, I think you will see my camera. Does that mean the blur around that reflection is my face in the flames?
To me the reflection looks oddly like empty church pews. Maybe I need medication.

It won't qualify for the mini-contest because the picture was taken in October 2008, but I think it fits the topic nicely.

I was inspired by a book i saw on someone's desk called "The Machinery of Life". This is an image of a kidney cell I took today (7/23). The red blobs are mitochondria (the "power plant"), the blue is the nucleus (the "command center") and the green lines are the skeletal structures of the cell. It's amazing and awe-inspiring to me to think that we are made up these elegant little machines...
Very Cool. I guess you could call it "The First Machine"
