Default Assignment: "A Mistake" ?-July 15

A Mistake. You've taken a photo, you were rushing, you hadn't checked your settings, SNAP, it came out all wrong - but you like it. I'm sure we've all got a whole hard drive full of these - let's see your best MISTAKE. For this contest, you can draw on your back catalogue (in other words, for once, you can use a shot you took three years ago) but you need to explain why it was a mistake.

Heaven knows I've made a lot of these! Unfortunately, I've deleted most of them because I rarely like them. But looking through my archives, I noticed this one. It wasn't at all what I planned to take. I wanted bright pink petals against a rich blue sky. However, my sky was totally blown out (taken near noon) and the dof was a little too shallow, leaving me with lots of blurry flowers (it was a bit breezy, too). But the lighting made the petals and leaves almost translucent. So I added a touch of sharpening to the main in-focus branch to help it stand out and a bit of curves in Photoshop to bring out some depth and color, plus a little cropping, mostly to cut out lots of blurry branches. Despite the overly light sky, I liked the final image, so I kept it.

As you can see, some editing can make a mistake acceptable.
Day 119-365 "Dogwood Blossoms"

As always, the rules...Please note the change in closing time.

Just a note to new posters: DO NOT start a new thread for your post. Please just hit the reply button at the bottom of any current post and put your image there.

1. Your original image you submit should be taken between ANYTIME (check your archives) and the 15th of July. Each week as an assignment closes on the Wednesday, it will be AUTOMATICALLY deemed *CLOSED* after 8am GMT ( 3am EST) and any posts after that time will not be eligible for the assignment competition. Don't wait until the last minute to post!

2. Your post must include "Assignment: A Mistake" (to show your permission to count it for the contest) and the date the picture was taken (to show that it is a valid entry).

3. EXIF data should be intact. It helps if you can include the main points (including camera, lens, date taken, ISO, shutter speed and aperture) in the text of your message. ALSO, THIS WEEK, EXPLAIN WHY IT WAS A MISTAKE.

4. Only one entry per member (if you can't restrain yourself until the end of the first week you can post two or three separate pictures but your entry should be in a separate post and the only marked with the text above). It must be an original image taken by you.

5. Remember the cross-site image size limit (800px on the longest side).

6. If the image does not exist in post at the end of the contest, it is disqualified. If you modify anything on flickr and re-save the image then the link is broken and the message needs edited to link the picture again before it will be included in the contest.
For everyone, please do not repeat other people's photos by quoting them until the contest is over. If you want to comment on or discuss an entry you can use a link to it (or just delete the picture from the quoted text).

7. If you are looking for the winners of the mini-contest, please check the front page of the DPS blog Saturday late afternoon (EST) and here.

Next week, Humor. I need a bit of a laugh and I'm sure you do, too.

Default Assignment: "A Mistake"

In this photo my children and I were at Little Glasses campgrounds in Oklahoma. We were watching the fireworks that were being shot. My two oldest daughters were sitting down by the lake and I decided to photograph them but I forgot that to change my shutter speed.

i took this last weekend during a pool party with friends....i had been stuffing my face in the kitchen when i heard the sound of drums coming from the boy's room.....as you can see from the exif, i had my little point and shoot with me..(yes, i replaced my trusty old girl with an ebay clone)...apparently i still had it set from earlier by the pool......just a basic program shot with the flash on.....it was dark in the room and the camera was reading the light with it's long exposure.....when the flash didn't fire right away i tilted the top of it so my old eyes could see where it was set.....resulting in all the weird light trails....the colors were so strange and the subject clear enough i said..."what the hey" and just uploaded it as is.....

not my proudest moment but i liked it.....

Default Assignment: 'A Mistake'

This was taken at the top of Katsuren Castle Ruins in Okinawa, Japan. I was attempting to capture my son's jump in midair. My camera was still set on a slower shutter speed. I didn't even realize my daughter was in the background. It made the blur of his jump work for me. I was a little disappointed that I didn't get what I originally wanted.... but really liked what was in it's place.

Assignment: A Mistake

DSC_0133

Camera Nikon D90
lens Nikkor VR 18-200mm F/3.5-5.6 G
date taken july 7
ISO 100
shutter speed 1/100s
aperture F/36

i was out early in the morning and i was trying manual so i try setting the aperature to the smallest because i wanted to get a clear pic where everything is in focus and was slowly trying to find wat was the fastest shutter speed i could use to get a decent image with that aperture. when i was at a shutter speed of 1/100 i pointed my camera to one of the boys of my group and took a quick pic looked at it didnt expect much of it but when i loaded it onto my pc on my screen the pic came out relli nice where the face was half exposed

still very new to the dof area and experementing with it xD

TNT: Margin of Error

TNT: The Margin of Error

On this session at a TNT Fireworks Stand I took this image, when I photographed the outside tent I noticed my camera was in Shutter Priority - 1/4s! No way I can stabilize a 1/4s exposure freestanding hand held. I retook the original product image, got home and realized the container of fireworks RIGHT IN FRONT was turned backward! I looked at THIS image after I enhanced the saturation, substituted it for the OTHER goof and they loved it.

Default Assignment: "A Mistake"

It was obvious I had no idea what I was doing when I took this picture.
I had my moms camera on manual and I just pressed the button.
The resulting image was completely underexposed and I almost discarded it while viewing my pictures.
Luckily, managed to salvage something out of the image in black and white,
and was left with a pretty interesting effect in my opinion.

After taking what looked like a black blank screen and turning it into an abstract portrait my dog, I began to realize what digital photography offers. Within the next few weeks I began camera shopping and finally bought my first SLR.

Red face Assignment: A mistake

Photography 004

New to photography so I do have loads of mistakes, just not many I like. I do however have one I took for the Abandoned assignment. I was meant to focus on the dog in the swimming pool but accidently focus on the side of the swimming pool. But I still like the photo. (and also I don’t want to miss an assignment as I learn a lot and don’t want to slack off!

Lens: Canon EF 50mm f/1.8
ISO: 400
Shutter Speed: 1/45

I was at a University Entertainment Show, I was lucky enough to have a front row seat, but my lens is 50mm prime. When he come close I can't move back I just point the camera at him and press the shutter (without even look in the view finder). I like the result though.

Default Assignment : a mistake

This isn't a mistake in camera settings. There were lots of nice reflections in the river so I intended doing a panning shot of a seagull flying over with its reflection beneath. Just as I took the shot a pigeon flew overthe gull on a slightly differrent line, hence the movement blur. The only bit of gull visible was a little bit of tail showing under the pigeons tail so I removed that in Photoshop. The original is on my Flickr page & also in Share Your Shots in the forum as I put it up there a couple of weeks ago.
