80s

DSC_1401

15 Jul 2008
Camera: Nikon D80
F Number: F4
Focal Length: 19 mm
ISO: 640
Lens: Tamron 17-50mm

This photo is from a photo shoot I did for a friend. When I came across this photo, at first intention, I was going to delete it. First of all, my friend was underexpose and the background was overexposed. And because I was shooting at a slightly higher ISO of 640, there is some noise that can be seen.

But after a few looks at the photo, I kinda like it so I have decided to try to 'save' the photo. As the photo shoot is somehow have a retro 80s theme, so I decided to give the photo a vintage look. I don't know if I have successfully 'save' the photo but I think I like the photo enough to select it as the cover photo for the photo shoot set of photos.

Default Buggos

This was intended to be a sweet photo of just the lily. I didn't even see the bugs on it until after taking the photo, and then realized in processing that I focused on one. I'm clearly a novice, but having fun, and I love what my mom always called "happy accidents!"

Wow! Very cool! It's kind of like when I look into a mirror. This is what I see.

Default Assignment: A Mistake

Shooting in manual mode with non-metering lenses is an easy way to get lots of under and overexposed pictures. Most of them get ditched but, once in a while, I get a result that has a certain charm:

Miscanthus sinensis 'Morning Light' - 1

This is unmodified and looks a little bit jumbled at Flickr medium size; however, I think it comes into it's own at 1024px wide and above. From this and other experiences, I have learned not to delete my apparent failures until I've had a chance to check them out on a bigger screen.

Camera: Nikon D40
Exposure: 1/400s
Aperture: f/4
Focal Length: 90mm (Vivitar 90mm f/2.5)
ISO Speed: 800
Date: 9 January 2009

For comparison, here is what I was actually shooting for:

Miscanthus sinensis 'Morning Light' - 2

I was taking some timed exposures on the pier in Huntington Beach. A couple was walking down the middle of the pier right at me, since they didn't even notice me I figured I should pick up my camera and wait for them to go by. So I reached down to pick up my camera and hit the shutter by accident. I liked how the light trails looked so I kept it.

Default Assignment: A Mistake

Was shooting a gig back in January --- a friend was launching his EP, and, good for him, the place was PACKED. They were literally standing outside in the rain listening in through the windows.

They had weird lighting system that cycled through a few different colours, some of which were awful to shoot with. Due to the crowd, I couldn't get anywhere near the front, so went to zoom in at one point. I wound up with the following when I took the photo while mid-zoom and mid-light colour change.

Here's the original image -- way over exposed:
From Misc

This was my first time "birding" and they are a lot faster than I can change my settings. A cardinal landed right in front of me and I just snapped a shot, then it flew off. I reviewed it and was disappointed. Getting back to the computer, I fixed it and really liked the result. Here is what I did with it after an hour or so in post:

Default Assignment: A Mistake

This was taken the weekend I got my first dslr.

I found the function that allowed me to take a run of shots, and this was the last of them, as I thought the camera had finished taking photos.

It hadn't.

But I liked the vortex like effect, and the way his head was still in focus.

I was going to try and crop it, and give it a photoshop dusting, but opted for the mistake as it was.

Default Assignment: "A Mistake"?

I was trying to take a festive portrait of my husband on Saturday, but after several frames he threw the streamer to the ground in mock impatience. My camera's autofocus grabbed the streamer instead of him, and this turned out to be my favorite shot all day.

Happy accident

Default Assignment: A Mistake

Volunteered for Miri (Sarawak, Malaysia) 5th annual International Jazz festival last May as a backstage crew handling bands before & after their performance, during their performance I would take the opportunity to take photos and post them on fb or email it to them later on. Anyway, being new to dslr this was a huge learning curve esp. taking musical performance photos w/o a external flash.

This shot was taken of the lead guitarist from Jeff Maluleke band - South Africa. I believed that had a good setting for this shot, but what I didn't count on was the entertainment lights flashing directly down at me giving me a over blue'ish shot when i hit the shutter .
After pulled the saturation & contrast level way down to give me this shot which I liked.
